Malta 2

So, Malta has been fun. We worked with refugees for the most part, and went to the prayer room and the Malta House of Prayer. We went swimming at Narnia guy's house, and went to the beach, and the market, and today is the beach again.

Tomorrow we fly back to Amsterdam, the next day to Iceland, and we have a night tour in Iceland, then to the US.

Can't believe outreach is almost over already.

Malta

We arrived in Malta, yesterday. We were picked up by three guys, one I never met, one we are currently living with, and one was the most interesting. he was a wealth of knowledge on Malta saving the western world. His name is Doug Gresham, and he invited us over to his house to go swimming in his 40 foot pool. You may recognize him. He's the step-son of C.S. Lewis, he and his brother have The Horse and His Boy dedicated to them. He's also the reason Fox made Voyage of the Dawn Treader instead of Disney. He happens to be the executive producer of the Narnia movies. I have met the executive producer of the Narnia movies, and didn't know about it until after...gah!

Also, Malta save the western world, twice. Once they were fighting the Turks, and so demoralized the Turk army that the army could no longer fight. The second was when the Nazis were trying to take over to open up attacks to North Africa and other parts of Europe. The Maltese army held them off long enough. The Nazis were bombing them, so that most of the building have been built since WWII. There was a church, where bombs were bouncing off the dome, because there was a prayer meeting going on inside. One bomb broke through and landed in the pray-ers, but it didn't go off. It is currently on display.

Paul also landed on the south side of the island. If you remember the story at all, Paul was bitten by a venomous snake. The people of Malta that it was judgement for a past wrong, but Paul didn't die so they all became Christians. At some point, something happened so that there are no venomous snakes on the island. A few years ago, there was a scientific study done to see why there was suddenly no venomous snakes. They brought venomous snakes from all over the world to Malta. Within twelve days, every snake lost its venom.

I also had a dream last night.
It was of a door with hundreds of locks in a dark room. People I didn't know walked forward and unlocked a lock (padlock, deadbolt, etc.). There was a gap of time when there were only a few locks left before the door's lock. a dim light began to filter through the keyhole, with a quiet tapping on the other side of the door. Another person unlocked another lock and the light grew, as did the tapping. Another person, then another, and another, and as they did, the light grew and the tapping became a soft knock. As more people came, the light grew brighter and the knocking louder, until it sounded like a battering ram against the door. The last lock was opened, so that the only lock left was the door itself. The knocking stopped, and the light was so strong the people were hiding their eyes. Someone, I couldn't tell who they were or what they looked like, walked up to the door with a heavy metal key, without being effected by the light. This person put the key in the door, blocking the light. People were angry from the loss of the light, not understanding why it was gone. The person wit the key turned it, and the lock opened. The person turned the handle, and the door burst open, flooding out the light from within.

When I told the person I knew it was for, he explained the the key was very significant to him and his family.

Creative Evangelism

So, today, our last day in Amsterdam, we did creative evangelism. Nicole, another girl in my group, and I were paired up and we decided to sing worship songs. So, we went to Dam Square and began to sing. Then, we decided God wanted us to go down this random street, so we did. And we walked, and walked, and walked. We had no idea where we were going, we just turned where we felt like we should. At some point on our walk I made the comment, "Wouldn't it be cool if God led us back to Dam Square?"We found this sculpture that Nicole got a ton of stuff for, and I couldn't figure out what it meant to me, until a girl and her dad walked by, and I knew I was supposed to give her a bracelet I had made. Then, we continued walking. I was planning on going out later and getting a soccer/football jersey for my brother. We walked out from a little side street to a bigger street, and there was a gift shop with the jerseys right out front, with the price I was looking for. We went back to Dam Square, but we decided to walk down another side street. Then, we realized it was the street we had come on in the first place. We went to the hemp store where we had bought hemp yarn, the stuff you use to make bracelets, to talk to the cashier that we'd met. She wasn't there, but we gave the cashier there a letter Nicole gave her before coming back to the church.

Friday, July 22, 2011

So, classes are done. Our day off is tomorrow. We're taking a bus to an authentic village, biking or boating around, depending on the weather, boating the canals, and watching a movie. Other than that, not much has happened in the past few days.

Day one Amsterdam

So, we did street evangelism today, which sucked. I really don't like it, because we had to wear these apron things, and those seemed to weird people out right away. I also wasn't able to say much to some of the people I wanted to, because we were partnered up with the people who do it every week, and I didn't want to upstage my partners when they were talking.

So, I'm tired, sore, and today was not one of my favorite days on outreach.

Classes start tomorrow.

Amsterdam

So, we finally arrived in Amsterdam, 24 hours later than planned. On Saturday, we left the school at 5:30, got on the bus at 7:00. We, then arrived, in Nairobi at 9:30 pm, two hours late. We got pizza and went to the airport. We slept at the airport, until 3:00 am when we checked in and got through security for our 4:30 flight, when we lost power. Our plane was diverted to Mombassa because of the lack of lights on the runway. We sat in the airport until 11:30m, when we finally were able to get to Cairo, where we had missed our connecting flight. We were put on a flight this morning, so they put us in a hotel and paid for our visas. So, we had hot showers, good food, and comfy beds last night. We got on the flight, and we finally made it to Amsterdam where we got on a train, then walked a mile, to the church we are staying at. We walk in, and our leader, Ruth's, parents are waiting for us with dinner. Now, we are headed out to a café for the birthday of one of my teammates.

Uganda

Well, Uganda has been amazing. We have cool weather, warm showers, and good food. We spent the last few days doing work projects, such as painting and trying to minimize the sound of the generator, youth group programs, and meeting Dutch people.

The compound we are staying at is owned by a Dutch couple, and is a boarding school and orphanage. It holds the full spectrum of grades, both primary and secondary.

It rained today, which was awesome, but them it got hot. It's in the 50s and rainy in Holland, a big change.

For our day off, we're going sailing on the Nile, and we may see the water again when we land in Cairo. I wonder if we would beat it there?

We also met a group of widows that make jewelry out of paper. I bought quite a bit. Some of them are HIV positive, and widows are thrown out by their families anyways, because if their husband dies, they are seen as not caring for their husband, bring about his death.

Kenya

From the Philippines to Kenya we were only allowed one bag that was 23 kilograms for checked bag. We had fifteen bags, and a guitar, including our team bags. Qatar Airlines wouldn’t allow us more than one bag, so we had an idea: weigh each bag and check to total. All fifteen bags added up made an average of exactly 23 kilos a person. The airline agreed, then said we needed to check the guitar, but didn’t add up the weight to see how much the weight totaled. We got all our bags through to Kenya.
Upon arrival in Nairobi, we drove to the YWAM base. Our driver offhandedly said, “If you look to the left you’ll see giraffes.”
Literally, in the back yard of the base, there is a reservation. We went hiking for an hour and saw zebras, wildebeest and two types of gazelles.
So, Kenya, AMAZING. We went to an orphanage and a church in Nairobi. Then we went to a village three hours away for an entire week. We did kids programs, high school programs where we split up boys and girls and had the sex talk with the girls (which is very taboo in their culture, so it’s not really disgusted more than once a year), and prayed for healings. I was healed of some back  pains.
At the high school, thirty-one boys became Christians, and we saw three people healed of malaria, one boy who never moved because of pain no longer in pain and dozens of other people healed of injuries.
Day off was at a orphanage, for elephants. At the moment, they have twelve. They’re goal is to rehabilitate them back into the wild.
Also, while in Kenya, we ran into another outreach from New Zealand, another Around the World team. They had four different outreaches within their school, and they’ll meet up in Israel for graduation. They were called Team Africasia, because they went to both Africa and Asia. They also have a Africa team, Asia team, and a South America team. We only knew them for a few days, but they were awesome to get to know.
The twelve hour bus ride to Uganda turned out to be fifteen hours. We got in a ten, ate dinner, and went to bed.

June 22, 2011

So, today was the last day in the Philippines. It's hot, buggy, and I'm painfully sunburned.

We went snorkeling yesterday on our day off. I really don't get it. I put on sunscreen, but I still got fried. Why????? We saw lots of fishes.

I can now rank myself up with Andrew Zimmerman, the host of Strange Eats on the Travel Channel, I think. I ate balloot, spelling unknown, first half sounds like the first half of balloon, second like the second part of flute. It's an egg of a chicken taken before it hatches and boiled. One of our guys downed the whole thing, gagging. I only could do a small piece, and another guy finished mine, only gagging once. It took me five tries to finally keep it down.

The other thing I ate was raw sea urchin. While snorkeling, out boat drives dove and gathered them, and the four boys and I tried them. They were good, salty and fishy, not much to them.

June 19, 2011

Tired, eaten by mosquitoes, that's today for you.

We worked with kids again yesterday, then the 17+ youth group. Today we went to church, did a kids program, practiced dramas, and preformed for the 15-17 year old youth group.

Lots of rain, flash floods, and geckos.

We went to see Green Lantern and had to move seats because the rain leaked in and flooded the floor level.

Friday, June 17, 2011

June 18, 2011

So, over the past few days we've worked with a ton of children. It's been railing a ton. I hand-washed my first ever load of clothes.

Philippines

So, we've done some stuff in the Philippines mainly working with kids. we did a prayer walk through the slums. We did some dramas and puppets for the kids. We have another kids ministry tomorrow, jail ministry the next day, and more stuff after that.

Finally!!!!

Well, I'm finally updating after two weeks of travel. Now that we're gone, I can finally get on to keep you all updated. The country we were in is very restrictive of internet access, you do that math.

Well, we did three things. and orphanage, a foster home and classes.

Orphanage
We went to an orphanage an hour outside the city. These three women give their time to children that people leave on their doorstep. We spent a few days there, playing with the kids.
As we had nap time on the final day, one of the women came up and said there were government people coming and we needed to go next door. We spent a hour and a half at her house playing phase 10, which I won. They served us dinner and hopped on a bus back to town.

Foster home
My group went to the foster home that housed HIV orphans. The two children we met both had HIV. The boy and his sister, who was as a different foster home. The other girl was adopted by the family who started everything.

We also had classes on Missions. It was awesome.

Holy Spirit Party

May 17, 2011

So, we had a Holy Spirit Party with our speaker, who is teaching on the Holy Spirit....Imagine that. Anywhoooooo, we walked through a prayer tunnel, and I didn't have much happen to me the first time so I went again. AAAAAAAnd, whooooh, GOD-HIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morgan, one of the girls on my outreach was God-high from her first time through, and we kept spirit zapping each other. And yesterday we learned about speaking in tongues......the things you don't learn at a lutheran church..........but anywhoooooo, still a bit high on God right now, trying to calm down so I can get to bed.

I LOVE GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Intercession

May 11, 2011

In intercession today, we prayed for North Korea. We broke up into pairs and prayed in our groups. My buddy and I both say a ripple effect after an event that will change what we, now, know as North Korea. She saw a wave washing away the snipers on the river to China, and we both felt a weight that we knew was to help us understand what the North Koreans feel every day.

At the end of our prayer time, one of the staff members said he got a vision that as we prayed, God was sending angels of light to the North Koreans.

Less Than Three Weeks

Well, this week was relatively uneventful, relationship week, the koi fish pond is leaking, digging up tree roots and the like. I went out to get ice cream with Danny and Hailey, my cousins for around here. My grandparents are making the hardest trip to come to their favorite place in the continental U.S. to visit me before I leave.

I am eating ice cream right now, while its in the seventies or eighties. Going to REI later with my outreach team. Only thing that would make things better is if I had melted peanut butter on said ice cream, but that means I'd have to go downstairs and put it in the microwave, but I don't feel like moving.

Happy Mother's Day!!!!

Worship Was Wicked

So, yesterday we were challenged to listen to God when he tells us to do something, so during one of the songs there was a huge group of us dancing around. We could feel the Holy Spirit drop over us.

IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!

Big Updates

April 27, 2011

So, here I will now give all the updates from the past week. On Friday we had Kingdom Night again, like every Friday. We did something special for Good Friday. We acquired candles and walked down the street toward our usual spot. On the way, we ran into a group of eight or ten guys with camp packs who joined us. They explained that they were learning what it was like to be homeless, so they could witness to the homeless. They had been give three dollars for the entire group for a month. They gave it away just before they met up with us.

During our service, we had communion. It was the best communion I've ever had, hotdog buns and Dr. Pepper. We sang worship songs and tons of people came to talk to us, and even joined us.

Two guys walked by and asked what was going on. They were muslims from Saudi Arabia. One of our Korean translators asked to pray a blessing over them before they started talking, and they agreed. She proceeded to pray in Korean for their hearts to be opened. After an hour of talking, they both became Christian!!!!!

Another experience, one both scary and awesome, a man walked up to us, and a pastor, Peter, from a church nearby started talking to him. All of a sudden, he started yelling at the pastor. Two of the students saw it and started praying. The guy got right into Peter's face and tried to punch him in the chest. His hand grazed his jacket and turned away. He tried three more times before punching a tree. I don't know what was said exactly, but Peter said it was obvious that the guy was demon possessed. As the guy walked away, Andrew, one of the staff members, said they should go after him, completely joking. A DTS student, Tyler, said they should, so Andrew, Tyler, and another person ran after him. When they caught up, they talked to him and prayed for him.

When we debriefed after, the two girls that were praying told us something awesome. They said they saw an angel standing in front of Peter while he was talking to the guy with a shield. Whenever he tried to hit Peter, he would hit the angel's shield instead.

Something awesome that happened to me, when we went to Ethiopia, I thought the point of me going to the YWAM base in Addis Ababa was that I could help set something up for outreach. That didn't happen.

I saw they two girls watching us at Kingdom Night, so I grabbed a friend to go talk to them. The two girls said they were happy we were doing Kingdom Night. One is going to India for three months, then they both are going to Nepal the month after for mission. The girl who is only going to Nepal told me she has a heart for working with Orphanages in Africa. I got really excited and told her to look at the YWAM Addis Ababa base, because they focus on orphans. And she said she'd come back this Friday to join us again.

Whatever Day It Is

April 24, 2011

I went to a church service where they reenacted the Holy Week story. It was awesome, with live animals and all. This week was relatively boring beside Jeff Pratt talking to us.

We are now watching Tangled.

Day 13

Last night I went to Kingdom Night, where we go to downtown Denver and sing and talk to people. Before we left, we made these encouragement cards, of which I made three. Near the end of our time, Andrew and Michael were talking about the cashier in Walgreens needing a card, so I joined their little circle to help. Andrew wanted to know what the card should say, so he could see which of his cards it was. Michael said it needed to say something about her being beautiful or perfect. I just grinned and pulled out on of my cards.

On one side I had written: YOU ARE PERFECT

And on the other: "All beautiful you are my darling, there is no flaw in you." from Song of Songs

So we walked into the Walgreens and handed her the card. Andrew told her that we had written them hours before, and this one was meant for her. Then, we walked out. We watched her through the window as she read the card. She got this smile on her face that I can't even describe.

JESUS HIGH!!!!!

Some other stories from last night:

Andrew and a bunch of other people had walked up to a rap war that was being streamed live to YouTube. Two of the guys from our group started battling each other, but instead of bringing each other down, they put in the Bible and Jesus' love.

The kids invited them to a barbecue today, saying they should bring the booze or drugs. Andrew then stepped in and asked if the recording was streaming live. When they said it was, he asked if someone was in pain that they would realize went away. One girl said her back was, so Andrew prayed and her pain was gone. She screamed, so was so shocked. A boy said his knees hurt, and Andrew made sure to say that it was the power of Jesus healing them. He prayed and the boy's pain was gone as well.

In the end they got invited to the barbecue again, but this time they were told to bring chips or juice. I think five of them are going tonight.

Another story was this homeless man came over and two of the Korean girls spent an hour talking to him. Another one of the girls from our group who used to do drugs was talking to a girl who then started smoking, and our girl told her to stop, and in the end took the drugs away from her and threw them away after talking to her.

Day 11

Well, this week has been eventful. Blake Mattocks was the speaker and spoke on the character of God. Yesterday, he talked about the monsters in the dark, the things we keep locked away. I couldn't think of anything, until Jamie listened to what I talked about. I fear for others. I never said anything about being scared for myself, but she noticed that whenever I talked about being worried I was talking about others.

He stress that we are World Changers. He also had a ton of one liners.
--Take a step of faith farther that you can see the answers.
--Rules and regulations without relationships read rebellion.
--Learned truth must becoming living truth.
--Don't be religious, be relational.
--Worst thing people of God can do is live in godlessness and do nothing.
--Salt and light are not what you do but how you are.
--Ask yourself honest questions then give yourself honest answers.
--Courage takes the willingness to rely on God.
--The promises of God belong to you, but the ways of God do not.
--For the believer, the battleground is the mind.
--The smallest act of obedience is better than the greatest intention.

I also heard the Voice of God this week. We were intercession after worship in Wednesday. We were praying for one of the teams currently on outreach, and I got a picture of a seed being planted in darkness. As the seed grew, light spread from it until the scene was just the tiny plant and a bright white light.

Day Six

April 9, 2011

So, today was kind of neutral. I got up at 8:30 to eat breakfast and make lunch, then went back to bed until noon. So, I've only been up for ten and a half hours. I ready some of my book for my book report due in eight days, called my grandparents, accidentally hung up on my grandparents, called them back, and ate cookies. My allergies suck. I can't stop sneezing, and they're zapping all my energy.

On Thursday, we heard a story about some guys in England, I can't remember their names. They took a boat to mainland Europe and drove to Afghanistan to hand out Bibles. They prayed almost constantly through the trip. As they drove, they came to Turkey, where they weren't allowed to have Bibles. As they neared the border, their car died. So, the border patrol helped them get their car started and completely forgot to check their papers and search the car. Next they came to Bulgaria, where they were having their annual border patrol guard picture. They sent over the newest guy who quickly passed them through so not to miss the picture.

Finally, the reached Afghanistan, where they were waiting on another miracle. They handed over their paperwork, and the car was searched. The border patrol found the Bibles, and the men were arrested. While in prison waiting on their trial, all they could do was pray for the Afghan people. They were brought to trial before the judges, and when presented the Bibles as evidence, said they needed to review the books. The following day, the judges had questions for the men, which they willingly answered. A new panel of judges was brought in because the others were cerupted. The same thing happened with that panel of judges as well.

Finally, the athorities released the men, because they weren't getting anywhere.

"What about the Bibles?" one of the men asked.

The reply was, "Give them to the people."

So, for the first time ever, the gospel was give the the Afghan people in Farsi.

Day Three

April 6, 2011

So, yesterday was exciting. We had an hour long worship session where we sang songs and prayed. Still a lot of into stuff, meet and greet kind of thing. Today, we had another worship session. We met with our outreach group, and found out exactly where we will be going and the general flight ideas.

First is our "Closed Country" via west coast and Japan or South Korea. Then, Philippines, the easy flight. Third is Kenya. Ruth made the comment that since there are so many people going to Kenya from the Philippines that we'll be going through China and Qatar probably, depending on flights available. We'll them, take a bus to Uganda, then back to Kenya after for the flight to Holland, via someplace. Finally, we'll fly to Malta. From Malta, we'll fly back to Holland, spend the night there possible, before catching the flight with a stop over somewhere.

Our first stop will be nine-ish days, teaching English and doing other service projects. In the Philippines, we will be working with the YWAM base in Cebu City for about two weeks. There's a dress code, I have to wear skirts-ick. In Kenya, again about two weeks, we will be working with the YWAM base, mainly with children, again skirts are required. In Uganda, we'll be doing practical work with an orphanage. There is a dress code, but I can wear pants that cover the knees. Holland will be eight-ish days with some schooling and evangelism. Malta will be two to two and a half weeks, working with refugees from North African refugees.

We should have a more concrete itinerary in a couple of weeks.

Monday, April 4, 2011

Day One

April 4, 2011

So, today was day one of training for my Around the World in 80 Days Discipleship Training School. There are ten of us in this DTS, three guys, seven girls. There are twelve people in the other DTS that will be going through training with our group. There are a total of four schools going on at the same time. We are all mixed together in our dorms. There are three other girls from the ATW DTS in my dorm.

I played a game of volleyball with some of the staff today, after lunch. We had a worship session that was like nothing I had been too before, even at the national youth gathering. From all my pervious youth trips, there were always the people who were just there for friends and the desire to get away from home. Here, everyone wants to be here. Everyone is here to serve God. Everyone wants to sing. Even the little kids from the families who live here were dancing around to the music.

Just thinking about this is only day one is exciting. We'll be here for two months. We will be living with these people until we leave on outreach. Even then, nine other people will be going on the same trip as me.

Monday, March 28, 2011

March 28, 2011
So, seven days left until training starts. I swear I missed the memo today. It must have been the unofficial "Been Jerks When You Call your Doctor's Office Day" today. Well, anyways, I'm packing all day tomorrow and doing any last minute shopping I need to do. I'm kind of curious to see what I'll realize I forgot when I get to Denver. It'll probably be something important like my Bible or something. I can't wait to meet everyone. Well, I get to help my sister with her speech homework now.

Sunday, March 27, 2011

Eight Days and Counting

March 27, 2011
I now have eight days until my training starts. I'm not all that nervous, more excited than anything else. I can't wait to meet the people going on the trip with me. I haven't even started packing, but I have most of the things I'll need.
